Ni plus, ni moins.<\/strong> De cette contrainte est n\u00e9e l&rsquo;une des formes po\u00e9tiques les plus embl\u00e9matiques de l&rsquo;histoire litt\u00e9raire. Popularis\u00e9 par P\u00e9trarque au XIVe si\u00e8cle, le sonnet a travers\u00e9 les si\u00e8cles et les fronti\u00e8res. Comment expliquer que tant de po\u00e8tes, d&rsquo;\u00e9poques et de langues si diff\u00e9rentes, aient choisi de plier leur voix \u00e0 ce moule fixe ? Certainement parce qu&rsquo;il condense un paradoxe qui stimule : la contrainte et la libert\u00e9. Prisonnier de ses quatorze barreaux, le po\u00e8te y trouve un espace d&rsquo;invention quasi infini.<\/p>\n<p>On associe souvent le sonnet \u00e0 la po\u00e9sie amoureuse. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/poete\/pierre-de-ronsard\/\">Ronsard<\/a> et <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/poete\/joachim-du-bellay\/\">Du Bellay<\/a> ont adapt\u00e9 la forme italienne \u00e0 la langue fran\u00e7aise, faisant du sonnet l\u2019un des embl\u00e8mes de la Renaissance. La bri\u00e8vet\u00e9 de la forme, son exigence technique et sa capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 condenser un sentiment ou une pens\u00e9e en font un terrain de jeu privil\u00e9gi\u00e9 pour les amoureux des mots.<\/p>\n<p>Un sonnet, c\u2019est avant tout une musique. Deux quatrains, deux tercets : quatorze vers, g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement en alexandrins ou en d\u00e9casyllabes, organis\u00e9s selon des sch\u00e9mas de rimes savamment r\u00e9gl\u00e9s (le fameux ABBA ABBA pour les quatrains, puis des variations plus libres pour les tercets). Le sonnet impose une logique. Les deux quatrains appellent les deux tercets. Le d\u00e9veloppement appelle la r\u00e9solution. La pointe finale est attendue, et c&rsquo;est pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment parce qu&rsquo;elle est attendue que sa surprise est efficace. C&rsquo;est peut-\u00eatre \u00e7a, la d\u00e9finition la plus juste du sonnet : non pas une forme fixe, mais une fa\u00e7on de penser en quatorze vers.<\/p>\n<h4>\u00c9tymologie et origines<\/h4>\n<p>Le mot trahit son essence : <em>sonetto<\/em> en italien, petit son, d\u00e9riv\u00e9 du latin <em>sonare<\/em>, r\u00e9sonner. Le sonnet na\u00eet en Italie au XIIIe si\u00e8cle, dans l&rsquo;entourage de l&rsquo;\u00e9cole sicilienne \u00e0 la cour de Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric II. C&rsquo;est P\u00e9trarque (1304-1374) qui lui donne sa forme canonique au XIVe si\u00e8cle, avec son <em>Canzoniere<\/em>, recueil de 366 sonnets d\u00e9di\u00e9s \u00e0 Laure, la femme aim\u00e9e et inaccessible. Le sonnet p\u00e9trarquiste devient le mod\u00e8le de toute la lyrique amoureuse europ\u00e9enne pendant deux si\u00e8cles.<\/p>\n<p>En France, c&rsquo;est <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/poete\/clement-marot\/\">Cl\u00e9ment Marot<\/a> qui \u00e9crit l&rsquo;un des premiers sonnets en langue fran\u00e7aise durant l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 1536, suivi de Mellin de Saint-Gelais. Mais c&rsquo;est la Pl\u00e9iade qui impose v\u00e9ritablement la forme : <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/poete\/joachim-du-bellay\/\">Joachim Du Bellay<\/a> publie en 1549 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/livre\/lolive\/\"><em>L&rsquo;Olive<\/em><\/a>, premier grand recueil de sonnets fran\u00e7ais, et <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/poete\/pierre-de-ronsard\/\">Ronsard<\/a> suit avec ses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/livre\/premier-livre-des-amours\/\"><em>Amours<\/em><\/a>. Le sonnet devient la forme po\u00e9tique majeure de la Renaissance fran\u00e7aise.<\/p>\n<p>Au XIXe si\u00e8cle, la libert\u00e9 d&rsquo;invention po\u00e9tique permet de renouveler le genre, et s&rsquo;accompagne d&rsquo;un abandon progressif des r\u00e8gles classiques. La contrainte classique se fissure : <a class=\"underline underline underline-offset-2 decoration-1 decoration-current\/40 hover:decoration-current focus:decoration-current\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/poete\/charles-baudelaire\/\">Baudelaire<\/a> (notamment dans <a class=\"underline underline underline-offset-2 decoration-1 decoration-current\/40 hover:decoration-current focus:decoration-current\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/livre\/les-fleurs-du-mal\/\">Les Fleurs du Mal<\/a>), <a class=\"underline underline underline-offset-2 decoration-1 decoration-current\/40 hover:decoration-current focus:decoration-current\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/poete\/paul-verlaine\/\">Verlaine<\/a>, <a class=\"underline underline underline-offset-2 decoration-1 decoration-current\/40 hover:decoration-current focus:decoration-current\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/poete\/arthur-rimbaud\/\">Rimbaud<\/a> ou <a class=\"underline underline underline-offset-2 decoration-1 decoration-current\/40 hover:decoration-current focus:decoration-current\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/poete\/stephane-mallarme\/\">Mallarm\u00e9<\/a> assouplissent le sonnet, le d\u00e9tournent pour l&rsquo;adapter \u00e0 leur propre esth\u00e9tique. La pointe finale, cette chute, trait d&rsquo;esprit, volte-face cens\u00e9e surprendre le lecteur, devient tant\u00f4t ironie, tant\u00f4t vertige m\u00e9taphysique. Le sonnet n&rsquo;est plus seulement une image lyrique : il se mue en laboratoire de modernit\u00e9. M\u00eame au XXe si\u00e8cle, alors que la po\u00e9sie semble s&rsquo;\u00e9loigner des formes fixes, <a class=\"underline underline underline-offset-2 decoration-1 decoration-current\/40 hover:decoration-current focus:decoration-current\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/poete\/louis-aragon\/\">Aragon<\/a> ou Jaccottet y reviennent, comme pour \u00e9prouver une fois de plus sa r\u00e9sistance.<\/p>\n<h4>La structure du sonnet<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>Le nombre de vers<\/strong>\u00a0 : quatorze vers, pas un de plus. C&rsquo;est une forme fixe avec deux quatrains (strophes de quatre vers) suivis de deux tercets (strophes de trois vers).<\/li>\n<li><strong data-start=\"489\" data-end=\"508\">Un rythme \u00e9gal : <\/strong>les vers sont isom\u00e9triques, autrement dit tous de la m\u00eame longueur (m\u00eame nombre de syllabes). En fran\u00e7ais, les vers sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement en alexandrins (12 syllabes) ou en d\u00e9casyllabes (10 syllabes),. L\u2019effet recherch\u00e9 ? Une cadence r\u00e9guli\u00e8re, presque musicale.<\/li>\n<li><strong data-start=\"747\" data-end=\"775\">Un sch\u00e9ma pr\u00e9cis : <\/strong>le sonnet ob\u00e9it \u00e0 un sch\u00e9ma de rimes pr\u00e9cis. Dans le mod\u00e8le classique fran\u00e7ais, les deux quatrains suivent le sch\u00e9ma ABBA ABBA. Pour les tercets, deux mod\u00e8les coexistent : le sch\u00e9ma CCD EED, impos\u00e9 par Marot, et le sch\u00e9ma CCD EDE, pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9 par Jacques Peletier du Mans. Cette g\u00e9om\u00e9trie sonore cr\u00e9e des effets d&rsquo;\u00e9cho et de cl\u00f4ture qui participent \u00e0 la beaut\u00e9 formelle du po\u00e8me.<\/li>\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">La r\u00e8gle des blocs de sens<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> est fondamentale : l<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">es sonnets explorent une grande vari\u00e9t\u00e9 de sujets comme l&rsquo;amour, la nature, le temps qui passe, la mort, la gloire, la mythologie. Mais quelle que soit la th\u00e9matique, le sonnet impose une logique : les deux quatrains d\u00e9veloppent le sujet, et les deux tercets y r\u00e9pondent, le retournent ou le r\u00e9solvent. Chaque strophe doit former une unit\u00e9 de sens compl\u00e8te. Pas de d\u00e9bordement d\u2019une strophe \u00e0 l\u2019autre : le sonnet impose des respirations nettes, aucune id\u00e9e ne doit \u00eatre poursuivie dans la strophe suivante, garantissant ainsi une s\u00e9paration claire entre les quatrains et les tercets.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>La volta<\/strong> La volta est le moment charni\u00e8re du sonnet. Elle se produit \u00e0 la fin des deux quatrains, au passage vers le tercet, et marque un tournant significatif dans le po\u00e8me. C&rsquo;est l\u00e0 que le po\u00e8te introduit un nouveau th\u00e8me, une r\u00e9solution ou un changement d&rsquo;\u00e9motion. La pens\u00e9e bascule, se retourne ou s&rsquo;intensifie. Savoir m\u00e9nager ce virage, le rendre \u00e0 la fois inattendu et in\u00e9vitable, c&rsquo;est la marque des grands sonnettistes.<\/li>\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>La pointe <\/strong><strong>finale<\/strong>, que les Italiens appellent le <em>concetto<\/em>, est le dernier vers du sonnet. Attendue et redout\u00e9e \u00e0 la fois, elle doit surprendre, retourner, parfois illuminer tout ce qui pr\u00e9c\u00e8de. C&rsquo;est le moment o\u00f9 le po\u00e8me se resserre soudain pour laisser \u00e9clater son secret.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4 class=\"text-text-100 mt-2 -mb-1 text-base font-bold\">La diff\u00e9rence entre volta et pointe<\/h4>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">On les confond souvent, mais elles d\u00e9signent deux moments bien distincts du sonnet.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">La <strong>volta<\/strong> est un mouvement : c&rsquo;est le tournant qui se produit au milieu du po\u00e8me, \u00e0 la charni\u00e8re entre le quatrain et le tercet (soit autour du vers 9). Elle marque un changement de direction dans la pens\u00e9e, une bascule entre le d\u00e9veloppement et la r\u00e9solution.<\/li>\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">La <strong>pointe<\/strong> est un effet : c&rsquo;est la chute finale, au dernier vers (le vers 14). Elle concentre tout le sens du po\u00e8me en une seule image ou formule, souvent de fa\u00e7on frappante ou inattendue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Pour le dire simplement : la volta change la direction du po\u00e8me, la pointe le conclut avec force. Dans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/poemes\/le-dormeur-du-val\/\"><em>Le Dormeur du val<\/em><\/a> de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/poete\/arthur-rimbaud\/\">Rimbaud<\/a>, la volta correspond au passage du tableau bucolique vers l&rsquo;inqui\u00e9tude croissante, et la pointe c&rsquo;est le dernier vers <em>\u00ab Il a deux trous rouges au c\u00f4t\u00e9 droit \u00bb<\/em> qui renverse tout ce qui pr\u00e9c\u00e8de.<\/p>\n<h4>Les auteurs incontournables du sonnet fran\u00e7ais<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/poete\/clement-marot\/\"><strong>Cl\u00e9ment Marot<\/strong><\/a>, premier introducteur du sonnet en France, lui consacre des textes d&rsquo;une \u00e9l\u00e9gance et d&rsquo;une sobri\u00e9t\u00e9 qui annoncent toute la tradition \u00e0 venir.<\/li>\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/poete\/joachim-du-bellay\/\"><strong>Du Bellay<\/strong><\/a> est le premier grand sonnettiste fran\u00e7ais. Son recueil <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/livre\/les-regrets\/\"><em>Les Regrets<\/em><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/annee\/1558\/\">1558<\/a>), \u00e9crit depuis son exil romain, est un monument de la litt\u00e9rature fran\u00e7aise. Il y utilise le sonnet non plus pour c\u00e9l\u00e9brer une belle dame, mais pour exprimer la nostalgie, le d\u00e9senchantement, la satire politique.<\/li>\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/poete\/pierre-de-ronsard\/\"><strong>Ronsard<\/strong><\/a> a \u00e9crit plusieurs recueils de sonnets amoureux, dont les <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/livre\/sonnets-pour-helene\/\"><em>Sonnets pour H\u00e9l\u00e8ne<\/em><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/annee\/1578\/\">1578<\/a>), qui contiennent certains de ses vers les plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres, notamment <em>\u00ab <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/poemes\/quand-vous-serez-bien-vieille\/\">Quand vous serez bien vieille<\/a>, au soir \u00e0 la chandelle \u00bb<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/poete\/charles-baudelaire\/\"><strong>Baudelaire<\/strong><\/a> a fait du sonnet la forme centrale des <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/livre\/les-fleurs-du-mal\/\"><em>Fleurs du mal<\/em><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimes.fr\/blog\/annee\/1857\/\">1857<\/a>). Un paradoxe apparent : un po\u00e8te de la modernit\u00e9 qui choisit la forme la plus classique.
