Un spectre m\u2019attendait dans un grand angle d\u2019ombre,
\nEt m\u2019a dit :<\/p>\n

\u2014 Le muet habite dans le sombre.
\nL\u2019infini r\u00eave, avec un visage irrit\u00e9.
\nL\u2019homme parle et dispute avec l\u2019obscurit\u00e9,
\nEt la larme de l\u2019\u0153il rit du bruit de la bouche.
\nTout ce qui vous emporte est rapide et farouche.
\nSais-tu pourquoi tu vis ? sais-tu pourquoi tu meurs ?
\nLes vivants orageux passent dans les rumeurs,
\nChiffres tumultueux, flots de l\u2019oc\u00e9an Nombre.
\nVous n\u2019avez rien \u00e0 vous qu\u2019un souffle dans de l\u2019ombre ;
\nL\u2019homme est \u00e0 peine n\u00e9 qu\u2019il est d\u00e9j\u00e0 pass\u00e9,
\nEt c\u2019est avoir fini que d\u2019avoir commenc\u00e9.
\nDerri\u00e8re le mur blanc, parmi les herbes vertes,
\nLa fosse obscure attend l\u2019homme, l\u00e8vres ouvertes.
\nLa mort est le baiser de la bouche tombeau.
\nT\u00e2che de faire un peu de bien, coupe un lambeau
\nD\u2019une bonne action dans cette nuit qui gronde,
\nCe sera ton linceul dans la terre profonde.
\nBeaucoup s\u2019en sont all\u00e9s qui ne reviendront plus
\nQu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019heure de l\u2019immense et lugubre reflux ;
\nAlors, on entendra des cris. T\u00e2che de vivre ;
\nCrois. Tant que l\u2019homme vit, Dieu pensif lit son livre ;
\nL\u2019homme meurt quand Dieu fait au coin du livre un pli.
\nL\u2019espace sait, regarde, \u00e9coute. Il est rempli
\nD\u2019oreilles sous la tombe, et d\u2019yeux dans les t\u00e9n\u00e8bres.
\nLes morts, ne marchant plus, dressent leurs pieds fun\u00e8bres ;
\nLes feuilles s\u00e8ches vont et roulent sous les cieux.
\nNe sens-tu pas souffler le vent myst\u00e9rieux ?<\/p>\n
