Il jeta dans le foyer quelques frondes de houx b\u00e9nit, qui br\u00fbl\u00e8rent en craquetant.

\u2014 \u00ab Grillon, mon ami, es-tu mort, que tu demeures sourd au bruit de mon sifflet, et aveugle \u00e0 la lueur de l\u2019incendie ? \u00bb
\nEt le grillon, quelques affectueuses que fussent les paroles de la salamandre, ne r\u00e9pondait point, soit qu\u2019il dorm\u00eet d\u2019un magique sommeil, ou bien soit qu\u2019il e\u00fbt fantaisie de bouder.
\n\u00ab Oh ! chante-moi ta chanson de chaque soir dans ta logette de cendre et de suie, derri\u00e8re la plaque de fer \u00e9cussonn\u00e9e de trois fleurs de lys h\u00e9raldiques ! \u00bb
\nMais le grillon ne r\u00e9pondait point encore, et la salamandre \u00e9plor\u00e9e tant\u00f4t \u00e9coutait si ce n\u2019\u00e9tait point sa voix, tant\u00f4t bourdonnait avec la flamme aux changeantes couleurs rose, bleue, rouge, jaune, blanche et violette.
\n\u00ab Il est mort, il est mort, le grillon mon ami ! \u00bb Et j\u2019entendais comme des soupirs et des sanglots, tandis que la flamme, livide maintenant, d\u00e9croissait dans le foyer attrist\u00e9.
\n\u00ab Il est mort ! Et puisqu\u2019il est mort, je veux mourir ! \u00bb Les branches de sarment \u00e9taient consum\u00e9es, la flamme se tra\u00eena sur la braise en jetant son adieu \u00e0 la cr\u00e9maill\u00e8re, et la salamandre mourut
