La litt\u00e9rature des modernes ne d\u00e9passe pas le niveau de ce que peut donner une certaine intelligence alli\u00e9e \u00e0 une heureuse culture. Il est m\u00eame piquant de voir \u00e0 quel point une certaine facult\u00e9 d\u2019assimilation jointe \u00e0 cette esp\u00e8ce de rouerie, de pr\u00e9cocit\u00e9 propre aux \u00e2ges pourris, peut tenir lieu de talent. L\u2019aigu d\u00e9sir d\u2019avoir du talent, et l\u2019approfondissement par leur intelligence propre de ce que renferme l\u2019id\u00e9e de talent, conf\u00e8re \u00e0 MM. Raval, Fierens, Cr\u00e9mieux, Morand, une existence litt\u00e9raire de contrebande. En mati\u00e8re de style, notre \u00e9poque poss\u00e8de un seul inventeur : Jean Giraudoux. Les autres ne sont que piraterie, surimpression, mim\u00e9tisme. Ces autres, une \u00e9l\u00e9gance identique les marque, une m\u00eame uniforme bonne tenue, un m\u00eame air d\u2019\u00eatre \u00e0 la page, et de savoir de quoi il retourne. Ce qui fait le po\u00e8te c\u2019est, \u00e0 la fois, la nouveaut\u00e9 (mais une nouveaut\u00e9 authentique, dense, spontan\u00e9e), et la substance de l\u2019image, l\u2019\u00e9chelle du sentiment, le courant souterrain, \u2013 car le sentiment a certainement une \u00e9chelle dont le degr\u00e9 marque la beaut\u00e9. Il serait faux de croire que l\u2019exaltation (je ne dis pas la qualit\u00e9 du sentiment, mais la classe, le rang, mais son ampleur) ne puisse avoir des
