Un jour, seul dans le Colis\u00e9e,
\nRuine de l\u2019orgueil romain,
\nSur l\u2019herbe de sang arros\u00e9e
\nJe m\u2019assis, Tacite \u00e0 la main.<\/p>\n

Je lisais les crimes de Rome,
\nEt l\u2019empire \u00e0 l\u2019encan vendu,
\nEt, pour \u00e9lever un seul homme,
\nL\u2019univers si bas descendu.<\/p>\n

Je voyais la pl\u00e8be idol\u00e2tre,
\nSaluant les triomphateurs,
\nBaigner ses yeux sur le th\u00e9\u00e2tre
\nDans le sang des gladiateurs.<\/p>\n

Sur la muraille qui l\u2019incruste,
\nJe recomposais lentement
\nLes lettres du nom de l\u2019Auguste
\nQui d\u00e9dia le monument.<\/p>\n

J\u2019en \u00e9pelais le premier signe :
\nMais, d\u00e9concertant mes regards,
\nUn l\u00e9zard dormait sur la ligne
\nO\u00f9 brillait le nom des C\u00e9sars.<\/p>\n

Seul h\u00e9ritier des sept collines,
\nSeul habitant de ces d\u00e9bris,
\nIl rempla\u00e7ait sous ces ruines
\nLe grand flot des peuples taris.<\/p>\n

Sorti des fentes des murailles,
\nIl venait, de froid engourdi,
\nR\u00e9chauffer ses vertes \u00e9cailles
\nAu contact du bronze atti\u00e9di.<\/p>\n

Consul, C\u00e9sar, ma\u00eetre du monde,
\nPontife, Auguste, \u00e9gal aux dieux,
\nL\u2019ombre de ce reptile immonde
\n\u00c9clipsait ta gloire \u00e0 mes yeux !<\/p>\n

La nature a son ironie :
\nLe livre \u00e9chappa de ma main.
\n\u00d4 Tacite, tout ton g\u00e9nie
\nRaille moins fort l\u2019orgueil humain
